first post: nuggets about sesamoiditis

i am creating a blog with info to help other folks navigate the murky world of sesamoiditis. i have been working with this often tricky condition for 17 years now and come through with some weathering and wisdom. Below are a few of my pearls:
  1. seeing an orthopedist is much preferable to seeing a podiatrist. orthopedists have more thorough training and can see the big picture of body mechanics.
  2. if it hurts, stay off of it! listen to your body. you may be advised to run less, or wear pad or orthotic, to keep going basically. this may work for you but if you are experiencing pain you are not healing.
  3. if you are needing to slow down your activities it can be quite a bummer. try non-weightbearing activities such as swimming, deep-water aerobics, chair excercises, or pilates. even if it's far from your style, keeping the juices flowing while you're not able to do your regular activities or excercise can be invaluable for staying positive while healing additionally, feeling wellness in your body will help with not giving in to doing more than your body would like you to.
  4. if you have been recommended to do physical therapy as part of your recovery, do not let your physical therapist convince you to do anything that is painful! for example, strengthening the toes while weightbearing will likely require you to put a lot of pressure on your sesamoids which can result in reinjury.
